The 4th of July is coming... have you made your peace with God?
So it's almost that time again, the infamous 4th of July show. If you ever want to make generalizations about our fanbase, this would be a good day to do it, at least 100 strong freaks from all over the 4 corners will be accompanying us to Silverton. You'll recognize them, they'll be the ones climbing the walls using only their lips. So this year, we've moved to an entirely new venue. We've usually played the eXplorer's club because we just loved the place, but sadly it is closed. Our other usual haunt didn't book us for the 4th despite the packed house we put in there on new year's eve... their loss, i suppose. So this year we're taking the show (and all the freaks in town) over to the Miner's Tavern on Greene Street. When you pull into town you'll notice a military truck with cat treads in the back (see photo) parked right in front of the Miner's Tavern. We've prepared oodles of new material and some very special features for this year, so this is definitely going to be the wildest party in town. If you want loud, crazy, trippy, sweaty funk and candlewax on the nipples, this is the show for you.

We've been pushing to have the CD released by the 4th. Will this happen? No. Well, most likely not. We've recorded and mixed What's Inside, Wet Dog, Vamos, Let It Dry, Tour De Cave, Red Headed She Devil, Blue Sofa Of Love, Old Pine Trees, Mushrooms, Look Around, Shoot the Bottle, Ski Song, and Sound Puddle so far. 2 of these may need to be entirely redone, and we still have Freedom, War with Utah, Whiskey Roll, and Devine Bovine to consider for recording. It's odd that none of our instrumentals (aside from bovine) are going on this cd. If you ask me, instrumentals are for live shows, and if you disagree, stick around, we'll be releasing an instrumental album one of these days.

Thanks for all the continued love and support, the journey is just beginning.

What just happened?
So we played Chris' graduation party in downtown Albuquerque. I remember thinking "a three hour drive for a house party? ugh" then the next thing you know we're plunged into complete and total debauchery. This cat knows how to throw a party, from the lights, to the tents, to the exotic dancers turned bartenders, this was a pretty insane event. We played from around 11pm until 6am, which is a long show even by our standards. Fortunately there was about an hour's break while the police raided and the party, thinned its numbers and kicked in a few doors (I'd like to say they were a bunch of meatheads, but they were very nice to us) We were sitting right on the little stage setup in the "disco" basement. The cops kept coming through but didn't notice us just quietly sitting on the stage. Then we'd hear some thumping, screaming, kicking, and then silence again. the lights would come again. We sorta felt like Anne Frank, without as severe a situation, of course. They finally found us and asked us to leave. we said "no" because we had so much fancy gear that we didn't want to lose. They respected that and told us to be quiet and lay low... so there we sat, thinking the upstairs was a giant processing plant for underage drinkers going to jail. Then, as quickly as it happened, we heard music blasting and feet stompin. Chris came downstairs and told us to get playin, and that we did. Pretty much a crazy event. Fireworks were going off when we stopped, that was cool too. We walked out of the dungeon into the nice dim morning light and got ourselves to breakfast. Did you know they don't serve booze until noon on Sundays in New Mexico? That's almost as retarded as them not selling booze on Sunday in Colorado. But in New Mexico, you can't even get a Mimosa with Sunday brunch, which, frankly... sucks. We could have used a Mimosa or perhaps something less fruity at this stage. We returned to the house, packed up our gear, and got our asses out of there before anything more bizarre and inexplicable happened. In general it was probably the best party I've ever been to. Chris, if you're reading this, the only improvements you could have made would be a magic palace filled with balls, and perhaps some sort of merry-go-round for the exotic dancers instead of a bar... Other than that, great party.

So today is Memorial day, we're going to cook some cow. You know, whether you're a tree huggin liberal pansy or a minority kicking conservative douche bag, you've got to acknowledge that we need a military to protect us from the world's other douche bags and preserve our way of life (like me playing in a band that sings songs about war with utah and sex with goats without the government hassling us) which is, by my last calculation, the best on earth. Sure, we don't get free healthcare and school like the frenchies, but hey, we're not pussies either.... EIther way, remember our soldiers many of whom signed up to protect our country and then got sent to a badly thought out and stupid war like Iraq and got shot... Maybe this memorial day, the best way we can remember our soldiers is by continuing to work to get our troops the fuck home where they can guard us from canadians and other political extremists. Either way, they're putting their nutsacks in the blender for a idea. That idea is protecting our people & way of life, even if their leaders have grossly mismanaged the definition of "protection". So, remember a soldier today, and give them a pat on the back.

Done, almost done...
so, we're almost done the cd. yes, almost done. One more push and it'll be over, or beginning, depending on how you look at it... We're heading to the ABQ sans kelly and it should be a blast, we can only wait and see. it's cold and warm, the river's flowing and the dogs are still looking at the sky howling....

Ding Dong Fallwell's Dead
I waited a few days out of respect for the family, but at this stage I'd like to say that the world is now a happier place without this hate monger. Ah fuck'em

Pagosa, July 4th, and Recording
See the jumbled mess of cables and pedals pictured here? That can pretty much sum up our recording experience. Not to say it is going badly, it is actually going very nicely, just to say that we're in a cramped space and we're learning a lot of ropes. Having recorded in both a professional and home studio, i think we can safely say that the creative process is infinitely better here while the technical process is slightly crippled. Either way, we're having a great time. We played in Pagosa Springs the other night, it wasn't the biggest or rowdiest crowd, but also wasn't bad. It is a pretty odd scene over there, I tell ya. I don't know if all the bible toting keeps people out of the bars or what, but I do know that Durango's deadest bar on friday night is partying twice as hard as Pagosa's liveliest.... Either way, we'd like to thank the nice people at the Bear Creek Saloon, our sweet friends from myspace and the infamous and increasingly smelly John Hodson who we love and adore. We made some decent dough to put into the album kitty, so that part is good. Our next show will be a party in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in which we're gonna rock. It is one of THOSE parties, you know "chips, dips, chains wips.... no candle wax on the nipples or anything weird like that... just your average party" Then we'll be in Silverton for the 4th of July. There is a change of venue for the 4th... Our normal haunt, Pride of the West, for some inexplicable reason hired a blues band... So we'll be moving the raging freaks party over to the Miner's Tavern this year so jot that down, kiddies... I really know nothing at all about the space in the venue, but I'm sure it will be bizzies to the wizzies.

This just in: Kelly just got called away on a wildfire in Florida where he'll be chasing flames in a tonka truck lookin 4x4 fire rig, so we MAY not make this party in ABQ, we'll keep you posted. You've got to hand it to a kid who can rip a mandolin and drive a firetruck on the same day. For your enjoyment, here's a video of Jesse, Kelly & I (plus lisa & biscuit) hitting smelter rapid at about 3500 cfs. I think kelly and jesse jam as well with the paddles as they do with their instruments....

Recording Continnnnnnnnnues
So, we've locked ourselves in a house with instruments, recording gear, and plenty of Mexican beer (hey, it is Cinco De Mayo afterall..) and we're finishing this cd... we've got too many tracks, some will be cut, some will be re-recorded, some are done. we're so very close. recording is going great today. maybe because today celebrates the people of puebla, mexico kicking the crap out of a larger (but slightly more ill) french force at the battle of puebla, we've been invigorated... did that make sense? I don't know.... what's interesting is that the mexicans lost the overall war, but hey, today is the day to remember the victory, not the defeat... we're rootin' for mexico.

Hello Summertime
We had a fun time opening for the High Rolling Loners. Town was just sort of dead that night, not the biggest crowd but not empty either. Durango is sort of like an alcoholic with manic depression, sometimes choosing to come out with bells on and other times choosing to stay home and drink itself into a stupor... Either way, it is drinking. We'll be back in the lovely town of Pagosa on May 11th, that's a Friday kids, and I think the place is called the Brown Bear but I better double check before making the posters.

More and more songs are getting recorded and finished. We're starting regular rehearsals again (finally) and will be swapping out all of the covers we play as well as adding about 10 new originals to our set, it should be a good time.

In other news, our good friend Sand Sheff has just released 3, yes 3 albums. They were recorded over the space of about 48 hours and contain some of the best music you'll ever hear. You know how people (like me) say they hate country music but they love Johnny Cash. That's how we feel about Sand... This homogenized pop crap that comes out of Nashville is not country, it is pop with a twang. Here are a bunch of so called cowboys who get in their huge dodge dually to drive from nashville out to the burbs and back. Sand's records, by contrast are authentic. Either way, check him out at cd baby

Why am I writing this a week late?
Well, I was hungover from St. Patty's Day! Why else? St. Pat's was a great night, thanks to MY NAME IS STEVE for the excellent mixing before the show, thanks to Brian Marks who sat in on the guitar, Josh Spaeder who killed it on the percussion, Jared Thompson for spittin flames and shamrocks, and most of all, our own Kelly Hill who despite a compression fracture in a vertebrae was on the stage singin and rockin. We had fun time, the energy was great... I was slightly suspicious of the green cookie someone handed me.

In other news, we're getting very close to finishing this CD.. No really, we are! It feels eerie.. I don't know what the universe will be like for me without aftergrass having an "upcoming debut cd" and even better yet, you can hear some of the new, unreleased tracks on STEAL THIS MUSIC so get over there and start listening!

Our next show will be fun one... OH WAIT! I just remembered... A friend is coming to town. He's scary and puts on just about the best show I've ever seen... He's called the Voodoo Organist and his show is sick! It is TUESDAY april 3. I realize that tuesdays are rough, but you should go see and support him, it is a unique act to say the least. We may (what's left of us) play a song or two before his show, or may not, either way, you've got to be there! It is a guy playing a hammond organ with hands and feet, as well as singing and the occasional theremin. He's got a drummer with him who lays down sweet beats on a junk kit. Truly a show this town doesn't get often.... AND OUR NEXT SHOW... is with the High Rolling Loners, a kickass California Roots Rock band containing a very old friend of ours who did sound for us as house parties AGES ago.... That is april 11th... weds!
