Another day in paradise...
So PETA came out today to criticize Steve Irwin's career, so I'd like to use to opportunity to call PETA a bunch of mentally challenged fear mongers whose constant anthropomorphizing of animals does a great injustice to humans and animals alike. I'd also like to say that PETA's propaganda is greatly exaggerated, and that most PETA members are city people who wouldn't know a wild animal if it jumped into their living room wearing a large amusing sign saying "I AM A WILD ANIMAL." While constantly applying human emotions to animals, PETA also ignores the existence of the food chain, and the very simple fact that humans ARE animals. Here's a quote from PETA's website:
"Chickens are inquisitive, interesting animals who are thought to be as intelligent as cats, dogs, and even some primates. Dr. Chris Evans, a scientist who studies avian cognition says, "As a trick at conferences I sometimes list these attributes, without mentioning chickens, and people think I'm talking about monkeys"."
Anyone up for some monkey-burgers?

The Telegraph
Durango Telegraph writer Ted Holteen has never really liked us, it seems. He'd always describe our shows as raving patchouli fests filled with hours of jammy noodling. The problem is, he never saw us. We'll accept any criticism of our music or live performance happily, as long as you were there. While we're on the jammy side of things from time to time, we play mostly concise songs that have lyrics and don't go on forever. To combat this, I've extended an invitation to Ted that we'd buy him some beers if he'd just come and see us. So this week in the Telegraph, we get this:
"It’s Aftergrass at The Summit on Friday night, returning to the stage circuit after a summer spent breaking into rental properties for gas money. (I’m speculating on that last bit, but as I haven’t heard from them recently, I am forced by management to make unfounded assumptions to sell newspapers. Even free newspapers.) Aftergrass is a great semi-local bunch who play that rock and roll music in a jammish style, and have also promised to play a Ween cover or two. Very nice, but why the five-star lock you ask? They have also promised to cover my bar tab for the evening, and while I usually only venture out of the house between “Matlock” marathons on the Hallmark Channel, a bribe’s a bribe, and I guess I’ll go check it out."
Ted's keeping us on our toes, and I'll probably grab the next issue of the Telegraph just to see what he'll say next. written by: eric posted on: September 12, 2006 |

9/11 Propoganda, idiocy, and lies. Today is the 5th anniversary of 9/11. Reflecting on this event, I get pretty angry hearing ridiculous conspiracy theories. If you believe reactionary rhetoric dealers like Rush Limbaugh or Michael Moore (one in the same), there could be something sinister afoot. I firmly believe that our president is a moron. I also believe that he is involved with some underhanded practices. I can't, however, subscribe to any other explanation for this tragic event other than the official take. The United States was attacked by extremists. Bottom line. There's no conspiracy, only an attack that left 3000 Americans dead. This is the best place on Earth to live, and those who died should be remembered. Speak with your vote in 2008, and change the system, but stop propagating nonsense that distracts from actual events. If you really want to be mad, be mad at the fact that those responsible for 9/11 are still running around while we waste time, money, and lives in Iraq.written by: eric posted on: September 11, 2006 |

The Summit... Ranting, Raving...
Ok so I'm a heel. I went rafting/camping in the desert last weekend (see picture), which is all well and good, however, I couldn't get back in time to play a party at Ska Brewing that we were scheduled to play. Kelly, Jesse and Bob stood around with their instruments wondering where the hell I was. Where I was, was about 200 miles from cell phone reception. It was beautiful tho. My absence also disrupted our practice schedule, so hey, we'll be wingin it on Friday night, but we usually do wing it anyway, and as long as you people keep drinking.......
Either way, you're all beautiful. I still miss Steve Irwin.

Crikey!!! RIP Steve Irwin
You know, I will argue with my last breath that Steve Irwin kicked ass. I have friends who describe his antics as "juvenile" or just plain "stupid" but they are wrong. I think what a lot of people saw was a crazed Ozzie running around pissing off various members of the animal kingdom, and in many ways they are correct. He did, however, promote awareness of wild creatures, the undeniable oneness of the food chain, and preservation of wild lands. And rather than be a holier-than-thou nature nazi talking down to everyone, he promoted these things to normal people via mass media in a fun manner. These are the folks who need to hear the message. There's no point preaching wilderness preservation to a buncha nalgene-toting granola munchers, as we already know how important this is. It is much more important to send this message to the suburbs, i.e. the TV watching crowd. Steve Irwin succeeded at this task brilliantly. Plus, you've got to admit the man was hilarious. He died doing what he loved, and he lived doing what he loved... Sounds like a good plan to me. Rest in peace, Steve. written by: eric edited on: September 05, 2006 |

Muskrats
Muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) are pretty neat critters... Also called "Mushquash!", the Muskrat is a semi-large rodent that swims in and lives near lakes and rivers. They swim very well, and eat plants. They also will grub frogs, snails and other smaller water creatures. They can stay underwater for a while. Not sure exactly what they're doing down there, but i'm sure it is fun. They breed like rabbits, having up to 4 litters a year. Muskrats are good. written by: Humanly Possible posted on: August 31, 2006 |

New Spoken Word
How big do you want it to get? How many houses will it take? Until we realize what we love is lost, And everything is fake
What's the dollar value of Undeveloped land, that quiet place Is it worth more to you to have Condos and traffic in your face?
Should we regulate this growth, With dos don'ts and dids? Or should we just smarten up And stop having so many kids?
Sorry, ten's too many I don't care what your holy book says Try taking the pill, wrappin it up But please, don't have less sex.
When did a golf course hold more appeal Than a silent forest Which is altogether and entirely Much more real
You can't find dope threads? OH! what a pity If you want that plastic shit, Why not move to New York City?
Keep the wild places wild, The places like this Burn the creek's village Go outside, and remember this bliss
The bliss of wild places That your grandkids will never see They'll see coke machines, putting greens Parking lots, and the ghost of a tree. written by: eric posted on: August 25, 2006 |

Chasing mushrooms...
We've been writing music, making plans, having fun. We've got a road manager now who will help us with our touring. We've added some new and old material to the songs page, and we've added a TON of new pictures to our photo gallery. We went out a few days and looked for mushrooms (edible ones, not freaky deeky ones) and we even found some. We're still alive, so they must have been the right mushrooms. written by: Olivia Newton John edited on: August 24, 2006 |

Good times back at the Summit...
Good times back at the Summit & the night before at the infamous A-Frame. Good friends, coool places. We played largely the same set from night to night with some minor changes. Thanks to Mitchell at the Summit for the great sound. Thanks to all the party people who came out.

THIS is good news.
check out this link and rejoice. A federal judge ruled that the US Government's warrantless wiretapping is unconstitutional today. It is such a relief to see reason prevail. This judge stood up and took this absolute power from our drooling president. Would you rather be free or safe? I'd rather be free, personally. written by: eric posted on: August 17, 2006 |
