We are going back to the Summit!
If you're a band in Durango, it is very hard to get by without having played the legendary Summit. The Summit is one of the best venues in the free west. You can travel the length and breadth of this nation and not find a place that goes off more than the Summit. Unfortunately we have been 86ed from the Summit for over a year due to some completely stupid actions carried out by our ex-bass player. Well, the Summit is finally welcoming us back with open arms, and we intend to rock the house until they kick us out. This Saturday if you're living or dead, make sure you come on out to the Summit to witness what will be a nice homecoming.

County Fair - Interesting
A very interesting show at the ol' San Juan county Fair. Kelly took a wrong turn and ended up in Shiprock. We ate like 47 different styles of New Mexico BBQ. That was really good. They said they served 4000 people, so that's a bunch. It was really cool to actually eat some REGIONAL cuisine instead of the normal blanket of mediocrity found in towns across America where regional cuisine does not exist. Applebees, Red Lobster, Pizza Hut, and Outback Steakhouses have homogenized American food to the point that from sea to shining sea we have one description of American food and that is: "boring and bad for you." The San Juan County Fair was an opportunity to get a taste of rural New Mexico, and it was damn good. Now on to the show. I think that we could have come out dancing naked whilst biting the heads off chickens and not a soul would have noticed. It is always fun to play out of your element. All in all a great time. It looks like we'll be returning to the Durango Summit soon, so stay tuned for news of that!

Cheers!

ok... how about we shut up and play music
You know what's worse than an actor or actress that shoots their stupid mouth off about politics, religion, society, history, and civilization? a BAND that shoots their stupid mouth off about politics, religion, society, history, and civilization! Although, we do have to write something here. A political or socioeconomic rant is probably more interesting to you than us saying "first we played F sharp minor, then we played E, then Bob broke a string and we drank beer. Then, we rode our bikes, then we went bowling" and so on and so forth. So I'll attempt to be unlike Alec Baldwin or George Clooney and pretend I know anything aside from the shallow existence of hollywood parties and people who think they actually matter and talk about something OTHER than the aforementioned things.... How so?

I'll tell you about the (drum roll please!) SAN JUAN COUNTY FAIR, the place we'll be rocking this Saturday (August 12th) from 4-8 PM. It is kind of a weird gig for us, as we're more of a late night, people crawling up the walls and giggling kind of band than the "County Fair in Rural New Mexico" kinda band, but you know what? We gonna rock the shit out of that place! I believe it is a BBQ cookoff, so it will smell like yummy meat. All we need now is a smoke machine. Oh wait.. we ARE a smoke machine.

Enviromentalism as a religion.
I was recently having an argument with a friend who basically (and stupidly) lumped all environmentalists with communists, inferring that environmentalism was unpatriotic, and illogical. I did some searching on the net, and found that there are so many sites that liken environmentalism to a religion. The sad part, is that the articles I read made it seem that it was a rabid and obsessed religion, naming the Unabomber on several occasions, and mentioning that if you're FOR the environment, you are against humans. Frankly I found this terrifying. There was no mention of moderate environmentalists, only foaming loonies!

The idea that there should be wild land for its own sake and not for our sake is considered completely crazy, and if you believe in this, you're deemed a "wacko." It seems like a perfectly reasonable belief to me. I don't support the abolition of humanity, of course, but it is also plainly clear that we exist as part of a larger ecosystem, not independent of that system. I'd propose a 50/50 split. 50% of the land on Earth for humans, 50% for all the other species. It might seem selfish to declare half of the Earth to one of the millions of species present, but hey, we've got bigger brains, but leave the roadless areas roadless.

Also mentioned in the articles I read were people bombing fur factories, throwing blood on people with fur coats, and chasing ducks and deer from hunters. This, again, is not environmentalism, this is animal protection. A true observer of nature will see that there are predators and prey, and killing for food is something that happens in nature. I've also read about the ill effects of environmentalism... Rolling blackouts, for example, were blamed on environmental regulation. So we don't want to poison the air. Maybe the trick here is STOP HAVING SO MANY KIDS! Look at areas like LA, Las Vegas, Phoenix, which could not exist as they exist without water & power stolen from the Colorado river (which is, at this stage, completely fucked) The problem isn't that man exists, or that man harnesses the power of nature for his own ends, that's all well and good, we were blessed with brains, let's use them. The problem is that we take too much. We keep taking as if it is our divine right to do so and it is not. It is vital that reasonable people stand up to the idiots who believe the planet is solely ours. Don't let rhetoric spewing morons run the show, they have been for too long!

4th of July - Part 2
There are certain times when you play a show that defines exactly why you play music. The town of Silverton comes out with bells on every time we play there. On the 4th of July, a few thousand tourists fill in the gap. The Explorer's Club was packed to the gills. Dialogue played first, a tough act to follow, but the crowd just wanted to dance, dance, dance, and party. It's nice to play for a crowd who doesn't care if you're "jammy" or "techno-ey" or "rappy", they just like music with a good groove. The town appreciates music itself, and isn't so uptight about the genre. They don't associate ticket price with quality like some of the dumber journalists in Durango. (Oh wait, using the term "journalist" implies a reputable news source.... ) and they are supportive of local music, rather than arrogantly labeling local acts as "hippy crap", "wanna be black kids", or just plain "happy". This show was packed full of happy people from start to finish, a great time for all. We'll see you next year, back in Silverton.

You better be pissed off.
The FCC has increased fines for indecency by ten times. Three hundred thousand for saying "fuck." This all stems from a bunch of religious wackos upset over their children seeing Janet Jackson's big brown boob. News clips of dead bodies in piles all over the world are fine for children, however, seeing a breast, the thing that we all started life suckin on and staring at, will get you a $300,000 fine. In another blow to reason and freedom, our "new" supreme court (read: totalitarian police state) has ruled that police don't need to knock when they serve a warrant, kicking in the door is just fine. So here we have a situation where police will be kicking in doors unannonced. When suspects react, often not knowing that it is the police, they'll most likely be shot. Great. We will lose our civil liberties slowly, one at a time... So slowly that we may not notice. In the meantime, our president is more concerned with the private life of gay people than he is with the aborted disaster in Iraq, the deflating economy, the enormous debt, and the slow transformation of America into a Theocracy. A few years ago, a small charter school near Cortez, Colorado was shut down because the religious freak parents objected to an art book with "The Birth of Venus" on the cover. WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?!?!?!? We need to stand up and take our country back from religion, intolerance, and general stupidity. Don't mistake my words here, I think that religion is great, and would never attack someone's religion, however, when people like THESE FUCKHEADS exist, we're in serious trouble. Intolerance is NOT a religion, and our country, despite what these freaks say IS NOT a Christian country, it is a country founded on religious tolerance, and life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Be furious. Stand Up. Storm the halls of the mighty, and piss off the top.

Good time... lotsa driving...
We had our Denver show. Not a lot of folks turned out in the hood for an underpromoted thursday show, but as always we had a really good time and I think we played quite well. Our erstwhile bass player dropped in a played a few old tunes with us, which was nice. Our new bass player did an excellent job and generally kicked bottom. Thanks to the folks who did come out, and thanks to Quixote's, who put us on, and treated us nice. What lies in store for Aftergrass now? We'll, we've got a few more tracks laid down, and we're enjoying the recording/editing process. I believe we'll be continuing on with that until our next big show which will most likely be the 4th of July.. stay tuned. We might try to squeeze a summit show in some time between then and now.

Cheers for beers

Upcoming Denver Show
So we have a very sudden show coming up at Quixote's in Denver. We love playing this place and try to make it up there as often as possible. We won't be able to hit Denver for a while after this one, so if you're in Denver, get yo arse up here.

On a different note, we're playing around recording what we can, here's a picture from tonight of jesse playing on a track that you'll hear on our ever upcoming CD.
